Internet forums are simply defined as a online discussion site. Topics are brought to the table and the idea is for as many people as possible to put forward an opinion. This leads on to a full discussion on the subject matter. Another use for the internet forum is to bring to the table a private or public debate. There are forums in so many fields, from dating, sport, gaming and music. If there is anything that wants to be discussed a forum is created to let people voice their opinion. The internet forum is the equivalent to the bulletin board and this is the fully digitalised.
Relationships and bonds are formed on internet forums due to people being brought together because of common interests such as music. Society has the chance to express their opinion on a subject and wait to hear other people’s views. A forum is very interactive and many great things can be learnt from it as opinion is what drives the world forward
There are many rules on a forum because of the freedom to write what you want without being moderated immediately. Everyone who signs up to a forum is read the terms and conditions and if someone chooses to break the law they will be barred from the forum and possibly face criminal charges. Forums are patrolled by moderators or administrators who are usually either the webmasters or the people that the webmasters fully trust to look after them.
Forums usually receive a lot of spam due to the levels of people participating inside. The more people about the better advertising opportunity it is for the ‘spammers’. Spam is an advertising ploy to get people to read what is sent on the forum, however this is seen as extremely bad etiquette and these people are usually blocked from speaking.
A comment on the forum is more commonly known as a post. Posts are either made to start a thread (which is the word for a new article) or in reply to someone else’s. Depending on the thread and size of the forum there can be hundreds of posts on the topic and this obviously helps generate traffic to the site as there are so many views on the thread. An internet forum is usually structured around a tree shaped directory containing these threads and posts within. The posters are what drives the forums forward and word of mouth is another way people hear about them.
Privacy is important on some forums and most have the ability to send private messages between members as obviously sometimes you don’t want everything to be spoken publically. So in case you were worried about people knowing everything about you this is not the case as on forums you can keep certain thing you need private.
